Portsmouth Football Club is an English football club located in the south coast city of Portsmouth. The team has been nicknamed Pompey and is also sometimes called "The Blues", therefore their fans are known as "The Blue Army". They play in the Premier League and are currently owned by Alexandre Gaydamak. The team is the current holders of the FA Cup.
The club was established on April 5th 1898 and was first managed by Frank Brettell. The club joined the Southern League in 1899 and their first league game was played at Chatham Town in September 1899 (which they won 1-0). The team has won many honors over the years. They were champions of the Football League First Division twice (in 1949 and 1950) and won the Football League Second Division in 2003. Portsmouth also won first place in the Football League Third Division in 1924, 1962, and 1983. They won many titles including FA Cup winners (in 1939 and 2008) and the FA Charity Shield winners (in 1939, 1949, and 2008). Portsmouth's home kit currently consists of a blue jersey, blue shorts, and blue socks. Their original kit included a salmon pink shirt, white shorts, and maroon socks. This kit was used until 1909 when they were replaced with white jerseys with royal blue shorts and socks. This kit was changed two years later to blue shirts, white shorts and black socks. The team's away kit currently includes a white shirt with blue sleeves, white shorts, and white socks. |
