Sunderland Association Football Club is a professional football team located in Sunderland which is in North-East England. The team play in the Premier League and are one of the most victorious clubs in English football, having won six First Division tournaments and two FA Cups. Sunderland fans were nominated the loudest supporters in the Premier League according to a survey which was carried out at every stadium in the league in 2007. The team was elected into the football league in 1890, becoming the first team to join after the league was founded in 1888. Sunderland remained in the top division until 1958, a record which only Arsenal has surpassed in 1992. The team won their first FA Cup in 1937 against Preston North End. Their second FA Cup victory was in 1973 against Leeds United thanks to a goal by Ian Porterfield.
Sunderland's home kit currently consists of a red and white striped jersey, black shorts, and red socks. The team originally played in an all-blue kit, then red and white halved shirts, until they changed to red and white stripes in 1887. The red and white striped jersey originated from a gift from the North East team South Bank F.C. who helped Sunderland out when they had to deal with financial difficulties. South Bank F.C. donated a set of red and white striped kits, including black shorts, and Sunderland has been wearing those colors ever since. The team's away kit currently includes a blue with black striped shirt, blue shorts, and blue socks. |
