Rooney currently plays for English Premier League club Manchester United and the England national team. Rooney was brought up in a working-class family and studied at the De La Salle School from 1997 until 2002. He was an Everton fan from a very young age, and his childhood hero was Scottish striker Duncan Ferguson. Rooney was signed by Everton, just before his 11th birthday, after standing out while playing for Liverpool Schoolboys and The Dynamo Brownwings. He achieved national fame at the age of sixteen (in October 19th 2002) when he became the youngest goal scorer in the history of the Premier League while playing for Everton. At the end of 2002 he won the title of BBC Sports Young Personality of the Year. In 2004, Rooney handed in a transfer request to Everton and on August 31st 2004, Rooney signed a deal with Manchester United worth around £31 million. His move from Everton still stands as the highest ever paid transfer fee for a teenager. Rooney made his first appearance with Manchester United on September 28th 2004 in the UEFA Champions League. He won his first professional Winners Medal at the 2006 English League Cup. He also received the title "Man of the Match" in the League Cup final against Wigan Athletic, after scoring two goals in the final. He became Captain of Manchester United on October 17th 2006, and became the youngest captain in the clubs' history. |
